Bunski Kanali

Where the Buna and Bunica rivers meet — clear turquoise channels and traditional waterside restaurants.

Turquoise canals at the Buna and Bunica confluence near Mostar

Overview

Bunski Kanali is the small confluence area where two karst rivers — the Buna and the Bunica — meet just outside the village of Blagaj, 10 km southeast of Mostar. Both rivers originate from karst springs within 5 km of each other; the Buna from Vrelo Bune (see our dedicated page), and the Bunica from a smaller spring hidden in a side valley. Where they join, the combined flow fans out into a series of side channels (kanali, literally "canals"), forming shallow turquoise pools and reed-fringed waterways before heading into the Neretva.

Why locals love it: while Blagaj Tekija gets the tour-bus crowds, Bunski Kanali has stayed a local spot — the kind of place Mostar families drive out to on weekends for lunch, a swim, and an afternoon away from the old town. Several riverside restaurants sit directly on the channels, with wooden platforms extended over the water. Fresh trout, grilled meats, and cold Herzegovinian wine are the usual order.

The water: intensely clear, cold (both rivers stay 10–14°C year-round), and rich with aquatic vegetation. Shallow parts are ankle to knee depth — children can wade safely. Deeper pools near the confluence are 1.5–2 metres, suitable for cooling off on hot summer days. The bottom is pebbled; no dangerous fast currents in the channel area.

For travellers on our tours: the Mostar Half-Day tour stops at Bunski Kanali for 15 minutes on the way out — a quick photo stop at the confluence before continuing to Kravica. The Mostar Full-Day tour spends 45 minutes here, long enough for a proper walk along the water and possibly a drink at one of the restaurants. The location sits just minutes off the main road to Kravica, so it adds almost no extra driving time.

Practical notes: parking is in a small lot near the main restaurant cluster. Access is flat and pedestrian-friendly. No entrance fee. In high summer (July, August) the restaurants fill up on weekend afternoons — weekday visits are noticeably quieter. Outside the restaurant areas, the channels are public; swimming is free.
