Fortica Sky Walk

Glass viewing platform on the cliffs above Mostar — the widest view over Stari Most and the Neretva valley.

Fortica viewpoint over Mostar and the Neretva valley

Overview

Fortica Sky Walk is a cantilevered glass-floored viewing platform built into the cliffs above Mostar, opened in 2023. It sits at roughly 350 metres above the Neretva valley, on the Hum hill overlooking the city's west bank. The platform extends several metres out over the cliff edge, with a transparent glass floor that allows you to look straight down at Mostar's old town and the Stari Most bridge 300 metres below.

Why this site: Hum hill has been a strategic lookout since Ottoman times — the ruins of the Fortica fortress, a 15th-century watchtower, sit adjacent to the modern sky walk. Long before the platform existed, locals climbed up here to see the widest view of the Neretva valley and the surrounding Herzegovina mountains. The sky walk was built to make that view accessible to visitors without the steep hike.

What you see: the entire Mostar old town laid out below, with Stari Most at its centre spanning the Neretva's emerald thread. Looking further south you can see the valley widening toward Čapljina and the Adriatic. To the north the Neretva canyon narrows toward Jablanica. On a clear day the distant Prenj massif is visible on the northern horizon. The sunset view is particularly celebrated — the west-facing cliffs catch the last light directly.

Visiting: entrance is free. Opening hours are typically 09:00 to 21:00 in summer, shorter in winter — check on arrival. The platform itself is compact (roughly 8 m long), so during peak hours (11:00–16:00 in July–August) you may queue briefly for a photo spot at the glass edge.

The climb up: Fortica is accessible by road — your driver can bring you to the small parking lot near the platform. Walking from central Mostar to the sky walk is a 45-minute uphill hike through residential streets and scrubland. Not recommended in summer heat, but rewarding outside peak months.

Safety and construction: the glass floor is certified to hold several tonnes of load. Anti-slip coating is applied year-round. Children are welcome but should be supervised; the platform's transparent floor can be disorienting for those with vertigo. The platform is fenced with transparent panels on all sides.

For travellers on our tours: the Mostar Full-Day tour includes a 30-minute Fortica Sky Walk stop as the first attraction of the day — we time it for the morning light when the valley is clearest and before the peak crowds arrive. On the Mostar Half-Day and cross-border tours, Fortica is not included by default but can be added on request via the Private Driver option.

Practical notes: bring a camera with a wide-angle lens; the view is best captured between 20–28mm equivalent. Restrooms are available at the site. A small café serves coffee and snacks. No food or drink is allowed on the platform itself.
