Mogorjelo Roman ruins

Overview

Mogorjelo is a 4th-century Roman villa rustica — a fortified agricultural estate — 3 km south of Čapljina in the Neretva valley. It is one of the best-preserved late-Roman rural complexes in the Balkans, covering roughly 7,400 square metres. The site has been excavated since the late 19th century and remains an open-air archaeological park freely accessible to visitors.

What it was: a working Roman estate producing olive oil, wine, and grain for local markets and the Roman army. The complex included a main residence, worker housing, olive-pressing facilities, grain stores, wine cellars, stables, and defensive walls with corner towers. It operated for roughly a century before being destroyed (probably by Gothic raiders) in the early 5th century.

What survives today: the ground plan is largely intact. Visitors can walk among the foundation walls of the residence, identify the olive-pressing vats, and see the outline of the defensive enclosure. The olive oil installations include large stone vats (*torcularia*) and the collection basins where pressed oil gathered. Mosaic fragments and column capitals are on display in the small on-site museum.

Historical significance: Mogorjelo is one of the few sites in the western Balkans that lets visitors physically walk through a late-Roman agricultural estate. It bridges the better-known urban Roman sites (Narona at nearby Vid, or the Adriatic coastal towns) with the rural economic engine that fed them.

For travellers on our tours: Mogorjelo works as a Mostar Private Driver extension for travellers interested in Roman archaeology. A typical visit is 30–45 minutes; easily combined with Počitelj (5 km away) for a history-focused half-day. The standard Kravica tours don't include Mogorjelo.

Practical notes: entry is free; no ticket required. No fixed opening hours — it's an open-air site accessible at any reasonable daylight time. Small parking area at the entrance. Interpretive panels in Bosnian and English. No facilities beyond the panels (no café, restrooms are limited — bring your own water).
