Međugorje

Bosnia's world-famous Catholic pilgrimage site — Apparition Hill and Saint James Church.

Tour guests in Herzegovina — Međugorje day add-on

Overview

Međugorje is a small town of about 2,400 residents in western Herzegovina, roughly 40 km south of Mostar and 25 km from Kravica Waterfall. Since 1981, when six local teenagers reported an apparition of the Virgin Mary on a hillside above the town, Međugorje has become one of the most-visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world — hosting an estimated 1 to 2 million pilgrims annually.

The three main pilgrimage sites are clustered within walking distance. Saint James Church (Crkva Sv. Jakova) is the town's central church — originally built in 1897, with the current larger building dating from 1969. Apparition Hill (Podbrdo) is a rocky slope about 15 minutes east of the church, where the original 1981 sightings took place; a trail marked by bronze relief stations leads pilgrims up the hill in about 30 to 45 minutes. Cross Mountain (Križevac) rises on the opposite side of town, topped by a 14-metre concrete cross built in 1933; the climb takes roughly an hour each way and is often done barefoot by devout pilgrims.

The Vatican's position has evolved over four decades. The Roman Catholic Church has neither officially confirmed nor denied the supernatural nature of the apparitions. In 2019, Pope Francis authorised official pilgrimages — a significant shift that permits organised parish groups to visit without requiring a formal ruling on the apparitions themselves. This makes Međugorje unusual among major Catholic sites: widely venerated by the faithful, still under formal Church investigation, and yet openly welcomed by Rome as a place of genuine prayer.

For visitors on a Kravica day tour, Međugorje is a common add-on for travellers taking the Mostar Private Driver option — the detour adds roughly 45 minutes each way from Mostar and about 20 minutes from Kravica Waterfall itself. The town is fully set up for day visitors: large parking areas, multilingual guides available at the church, a cluster of restaurants and souvenir shops along the main street, and English-speaking staff at most hotels.

Practical notes: entry to the church, Apparition Hill, and Cross Mountain is free. The Adoration Chapel and several side chapels are open to the public during daylight hours. Mass is celebrated in multiple languages daily — English, Italian, German, and Croatian typically scheduled on the church bulletin. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) if attending services. The busiest periods are the anniversary of the first apparition (24 June) and major Catholic feast days.

How it connects to Kravica: Međugorje and Kravica Waterfall sit roughly 25 km apart on the same south-Herzegovina loop. A full-day Mostar Private Driver tour can comfortably combine both — a morning at Kravica (2–3 hours, swimming and walking), then lunch and a reflective afternoon in Međugorje. Groups wanting a dedicated pilgrimage day can request a Mostar pickup, 3–4 hours at the pilgrimage sites, with an optional 90-minute stop at Kravica on the return for swimming and a break.
